FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I expect from the first counseling visit?

The first time we meet is the initial intake session. This should take approximately one hour. Before I can provide any counseling services, we need to review the required paperwork such as the informed consent form and the notice of privacy practices. These forms can be completed before the session. Our first session will be a chance for me to listen and understand all that is bothering you. Then we will begin to work on a treatment plan. The next sessions focus on the progress toward the goal/s stated on the treatment plan.

Why don’t you accept insurance?

Most insurance companies require a clinical diagnosis to reimburse for treatment. Some may require additional clinical information to support payment. Information collected by an insurance company will become part of the company’s files. Though all insurance companies claim to keep such information confidential, I have no control over what they do with it once it is in their possession. Medical data has also been reported to be legally accessed by enforcement and other agencies, which may place you in a vulnerable position. The safest way to protect confidentiality is to pay cash for treatment. I charge a fee comparable to my experience, education, and training.

What is the therapeutic approach that you use?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the approach that I use with my clients who are experiencing bullying. It is a highly effective, research-based treatment method for issues related to bullying such as anxiety and depression. The CBT approach focuses on challenging negative thoughts and behaviors, and learning new healthier ways of coping with them. I have seen my students and clients make great progress by using this method.

What is the difference between counseling, coaching, and consulting?

Counseling is the process conducted by licensed professionals that focuses on addressing a personal issue with the client, often related to emotions and behavior. The client and counselor work together to help the client cope, adapt and build skills to reduce the distress caused by this issue.

Coaching involves setting and achieving goals with the assistance of a person who asks you helpful and focused questions. Your coach’s emphasis is on your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges related to the goals you have set.

Consulting is the service you seek to answer a specific problem using the expert knowledge of a professional. A consultant has specialized knowledge and expertise on the issue (i.e., bullying) that is of interest to you.
